Span

The span, or distance between supports, of joists, beams, or trusses is an important consideration that architects need to keep in mind when designing the structure of the home. In order to build a secure structure, the span is limited based on the kind of materials being used, how large the materials are, the grade of the materials, spacing, and other factors.

If a structure was built and it exceeded the maximum span appropriate for its construction, the joists, beams, or trusses will not be able to hold sturdy the weight they are designed to support. There will need to be walls, posts, beams, or another method of stabilizing the materials in order to keep them under the maximum span allowed.

The span is one of the most crucial elements in a custom home plan. An experienced home designer can ensure it’s up to code and safe before construction starts.
